Low Water Bass Fishing

By Ron Hancock

As I write this article the lake
level at Hartwell Lake is down 12.76
ft below full pool. I think it’s easy to
assume that since there is less water
the Bass should be easier to catch,
not true. Even with low water there
is still a lot of water and lots of deep
water. Remember Lake Hartwell is
about 56,000 acres at normal pool and
I am not sure if there is a calculation
of acres at this level but it’s still a big
lake.
Actually for me, this fall and winter
has been much slower than previous
years in numbers of fish and size.
Let me share a few thoughts about
why. If you have fished the lake for a
long time like I have there are certain
areas and spots that produce fish on a
regular basis and we get used to going
there. When the water falls many
of these spots are high and dry so it’s
back to the drawing board to locate
other structure or spots that hold fish.
The habits of the Bass are the same;
they follow the bait fish to creeks and
coves in the fall and return to deeper
structure as the water cools more.
Largemouth Bass normally like
shallow water so at any time of year
there will be some fish in shallow water.
The water temp now is about 55-58
degrees and I am still catching good
fish in less than 10 ft of water, some
as shallow as 3 ft. At the same time
I am catching Bass at 30+ft depths. I
guess what I am trying to say is the
bass are moving and searching new
areas to hold. This lake has a lot of
standing trees. At normal pool most
of these trees are too deep to hold fish
or fish effectively, now in some areas
they become key structure and to me
this is what a lot of fish are doing and
why they are harder to catch. The key
is to determine which area of trees will
hold fish and to me this is a challenge.
I am sure if you talk to ten anglers they
will all have opinions and that’s what
so great about Bass fishing, they are
probably also right on their ideas.
Confidence still plays a big role in
Bass fishing along with some luck and
if you constantly read stories or follow
other people’s instructions you prob-ably
won’t become a good angler. You
Bass Fishing on Lake Hartwell
need to take the basics and apply your
skills and knowledge and feel good
about what you are doing to become a
better angler.
As most of you know Lake Hartwell
is the site of the Bass Masters
Classic in late February 2008. This
is the “Super Bowl” of Bass fishing.
There will be 50 of the top Anglers
across the country competing for a lot
of money. Many local anglers will be
excited about observing these fishermen
on the lake. If you are on the water
during the tournament, please show
these guys a lot of courtesy and give
them lots of room to fish, they work
hard and spend lots of time and money
to get here. The worse thing about low
water is the danger of running the lake,
so remember that as well. If you would
