Taking your dog boating can be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience, but it requires a little extra preparation to ensure both you and your furry companion stay safe and comfortable on the water. Whether it’s a relaxing afternoon cruise or an adventurous day on the lake, with the right precautions, your dog can enjoy the ride just as much as you do. From outfitting them with a proper life jacket to getting them acclimated to the boat, there are a few key things to consider before setting out.
1) Before you head out make sure your dog has a life jacket. Even if your dog’s a strong swimmer, a well-fitted life preserver is a must, especially with a handle on top so you can easily lift them out of the water.
2) Let your dog explore the boat while it’s docked to get comfortable with the space, smell and sound.
3) Bring a pee pads or a turf mat if you’re out for a while. It helps to train them on it before the trip.
4) Dogs can overheat fast. Bring a bowl and plenty of water, making sure there’s a shade spot for them to rest.
5)Some dogs get queasy. Start with short trips and watch for signs like drooling, shaking or vomiting.
6) While cruising, have a comfy, safe spot, safe spot where they can’t fall overboard, or tether can help if needed. Never leave them tied and unattended.
7) Bring their favorite toy or blanket for comfort.
8) Use dog friendly sunscreen on areas with less fur, like the nose or ears.
9) Always have a leash on hand for docking or bathroom breaks.
10) Enjoy your day on the water with your furry friend
