May is National Water Safety Month, a great reminder for boaters to make safety a priority before spending time on the water this summer. As boating activity increases, Operation Dry Water encourages everyone to stay prepared and practice safe boating habits every time they leave the dock.
Simple precautions can make a major difference, from wearing life jackets to staying sober while operating a vessel. Safe choices help protect passengers, prevent accidents, and save lives.
Important Boating Safety Reminders:
• Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Make sure everyone onboard wears a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket
• Use an engine cut off switch while operating the vessel
• Complete a boating safety course before heading out on the water
• File a float plan before each trip
• Carry all required emergency equipment, including distress signals and sound producing devices
• Follow buoys and navigation markers carefully
• Stay alert and maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times
• Check weather conditions before departure and continue monitoring them throughout your trip
• Bring at least two waterproof communication devices in case of emergency
Help share these important boating safety reminders with your community this summer.
