Annual Lake Hartwell Polar Bear Plunge & Winter Festival to Celebrate 30 Year

Hartwell, GA — The beloved Polar Bear Plunge & Winter Festival is returning to Lake Hartwell on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Gum Branch Mega Ramp — marking three decades of chilly splashes and community spirit for a vital cause.

This unique winter event benefits the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence (NEGACDV), a nonprofit dedicated to providing free and confidential support services to victims of domestic violence across Hart, Franklin, and Elbert counties.

Fundraising for a Critical Mission

Each year, the Polar Bear Plunge draws participants and spectators alike, all united in support of survivors of domestic violence. The funds raised through registrations, sponsorships, and community engagement contribute directly to counseling, shelter support, crisis intervention, and advocacy services that help individuals and families rebuild their lives.

Domestic violence remains a serious concern in Georgia. In recent years, data reported by state health officials and community partners have highlighted alarming trends — with more than 100 domestic violence–related deaths recorded statewide in past years and significant proportions of violent crime in some counties involving family violence. These sobering statistics underscore the importance of community-driven awareness and support events like the Polar Bear Plunge. (The underlying context about violence statistics is widely reported in regional community safety reports and supports rallying around causes like NEGACDV’s mission.)

2026 Event Schedule and Activities

The day’s activities begin well before the plunge, making the festival a fun, family-oriented occasion:

  • 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM: Winter Festival — Enjoy food vendors, live music, face painting, games, and more.
  • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Plunge Registration — Participants check in and prepare for the jump.
  • 12:30 PM: Costume Line-Up & Official Plunge — Brave souls in creative costumes take the plunge into icy Lake Hartwell.

Many participants turn the plunge into a community-wide celebration, sporting imaginative costumes and raising pledges from friends, families, schools, and local businesses. The festival atmosphere also features vendors and activities suitable for all ages, making it an engaging day out while supporting a meaningful local mission.

Community Impact and Participation

Organizers estimate that hundreds of local residents and visitors have joined the plunge in recent years either as participants or spectators, helping to elevate awareness around domestic violence and support vital services. For many, the event is as much about fellowship and fun as community advocacy.

Registration details, sponsorship opportunities, and additional event information will be available on the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence’s website as the event approaches.
